The two projects presented by our school in Galiciencia 2019, the most important science fair in Galicia, have obtained a resounding success, both receiving awards, one as “absolute winner” of the fair and the other within the “Health and good habits” category.
Nuno Sinde and Pedro Fernández, students taking DP1 of the International Baccalaureate, won the unanimous support of the panel of judges for their project entitled “Biological fight against the Asian hornet using Cordyceps militaris”, obtaining the main prize at the fair. In addition, the projects stand was very popular at the three-day event organised by the Technology Park of Galicia-Tecnópole with the collaboration of the Ministry of Economy and Industry of the Xunta de Galicia, the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECyT).
Apart from the interest generated at the fair itself, with visits from representatives of Regional Environment Ministry of the Xunta de Galcicia, the press also featured the impact of this project. The students were appeared in a live interview with the COPE and on TVE, as well as on Radio Galega and La Voz de Galicia.
The prize consisted in winning an entry and funding for Exporecerca, the International Research Fair to be held in Barcelona in March 2020.
On the other hand, their classmates from the Diploma Programme, Sofía Prieto and Roi Santos, obtained the award for the project with the best research topic in the field of health and good habits for their work “Health & So: healthy fast food”. This consisted in a mobile application related to a fast food restaurant for the personalisation of healthy meals with products sourced locally.
From SEK-Atlántico we would like to offer our sincere congratulations to the students who triumphed at the Galiciencia fair.
